Nostradamus No-Vig

March 31, 2023 by Jeff Donchess

The Nostradamus No-Vig is a tool that projects what the true no-vig line is on an event.

Introduction

Who is Nostradamus? He was a French astrologer, physician, and author who lived in the 16th century. He is best known for his book "Les Propheties," a collection of 942 quatrains that he claimed predicted future events. Nostradamus gained a reputation as a prophet and his prophecies have been interpreted in various ways over the centuries, with some claiming he accurately predicted major events such as the French Revolution and World War II. Thus, he is the perfect namesake for this predictive tool!

What is a No-Vig Line?

A no-vig line, also known as a "fair line," is a betting line that does not include the sportsbook's commission or "vig" (short for vigorish). Sportsbooks typically add a commission to each betting line in order to ensure a profit regardless of the outcome of the event. A no-vig line, on the other hand, reflects the true probability of the event and eliminates the sportsbook's commission. This allows bettors to compare odds more accurately and make informed decisions about their bets. No-vig lines are often used by professional sports bettors and can be found on certain websites and betting exchanges.

Which No-Vig Lines Are Commonly Used?

There are actually two parts to this question.

The first question is "Which sports book do you use?" Many professional bettors choose a no-vig line from a specific sports book. This sportsbook can vary from bettor to bettor, but you'll occasionally hear the names of Pinnacle, Bookmaker, BetCRIS, and others thrown out there.

The second question is "Which no-vig formula do you use?" Most people don't realize that there are actually a variety of ways to calculate the no-vig. The most common method is the Equal Margin Method, but there are other varieties: MPTO, the Shin Method, the Logarithmic Method, and more! The Equal Margin Method is the easiest to calculate, but has great difficulty with long odds. Meanwhile, a system like the Shin Method takes multiple iterations and is complicated to calculate. So while it may be better, it's more difficult to use.

How is Nostradumus No-Vig Calculated?

While we aren't going to give out our secret sauce, there are a few things that we can tell you. First, we do use multiple sharp books that are tuned specifically per sport. Second, we take a blend of a few of the no-vig methods listed above. After all, we want to make sure that those no-vig lines that have long odds are accurately calculated. Lastly, there are a few other variables that help us predict where the line is going. We can't give that out or our competitors will copy us.
